Ecommerce Over International Waters

Background

As a world-class oceanographic and water quality instruments specialist, Sea-Bird Scientific is a mega-brand that combines four of the top companies in the industry—Sea-Bird Electronics, Satlantic, Sea-Bird Coastal, and WET Labs. It is critical to the competitive success of SBS to always be implementing new and innovative ideas—from sensors to spectrophotometers and every benthic pod in between. Once we got our feet wet and understood this vast and unique product inventory, it was time to dive in and roll out their e-commerce strategy.

Challenge

With loyal customers from around the world calling SBS for everything from routine items to custom large orders, the sales team was swamped. And while it's great to be busy, they knew they needed to be more efficient. The new Sea-Bird Scientific website had to make it easy for customers to order exactly what they want, when they want it without getting stuck in the bottleneck of the sales support channel. By implementing an online store with e-commerce capabilities, the new website would drive sales and position SBS as leaders in their industry.

Approach

Our goal was to develop a clean, simple site to serve as a main landing point for customers looking to learn more about the Sea-Bird Scientific brand while maintaining the existing brand equity of Satlantic, Sea-Bird Coastal, and WET Labs. Since regular customers were used to visiting the Sea-Bird Electronics website, we created a simple path for them that interlaces the product pages of the sister sites to the new Sea-Bird Scientific e-commerce site. We also built a custom product configuration module that makes it easier for customers to tailor a product to their research-specific needs.

Result

Sea-Bird Scientific now has an engaging, responsive website that stands out against competitors and successfully showcases their extensive product line. Customers can order their favourite products with ease and the sales team has a powerful resource that allows them to keep their heads fully above water.
