Noteworthy project & industry updates, staff musings and all-around general shenanigans from the bits office.

2016 was a wild ride for the bits team (in the best way possible!) and we’ve decided to close it out with some warm fuzzies. In lieu of designing, printing and mailing a holiday card this year, we switched it up and allocated those resources towards a good cause. After thinking long and hard about what we wanted to send to the people who continue to support us, we decided to make a donation on their behalf. Lucky for us, we work with a ton of generous, kind-hearted folks who we think will appreciate this change in our approach to spreading yuletide cheer. If you’ve ever taken a cruise through our social feeds, you’ll know we are passionate about food here. Our love of enjoying food with family and friends is what inspired us to donate to Feed Nova Scotia this year. Feed NS is an organization whose main objective is to feed people living in Nova Scotia via their member network of 147 food banks and meal programs across the province.

Ah... Spring! It might just be our favourite season here at the office. Goodbye sweater weather, shorter days & snowstorms and helloooo sunshine!

And because we are in such cheery spirits around here; we're super pumped to announce the second round of our bits.co Brand Spring Clean!

CONTENT STRATEGIST

It's been an action-packed year at bits.co. Not only have we increased the number of names on our roster, we’ve also expanded our service offering. As a company that was born in the digital space 6 years ago, we've earned a reputation in and outside the region for our top notch web development talent. And while we remain true to our roots in web, over the past couple of years we've found our offering extend into the traditional space.

In March 2015 we ran our first Brand Spring Clean contest and Phoenix Youth Programs really impressed us with their submission. Since then, we’ve been working closely with Phoenix to bring their brand identity to a level they can be proud of, ensuring it represents the work they do to a tee.

Building Nova Centre’s branding, marketing, and digital presence has been one of our most exciting projects yet, and we’re flying high from the excitement of working on such a seminal development. 16 stories high in fact.

The English playwright and poet, William Congreve, once wrote, “Music hath charms to soothe a savage breast, to soften rocks, or bend a knotted oak.”

I didn’t plan on becoming a content strategist. In fact, I had never heard of the position before I applied for it.

When Marty McFly stepped into the time machine, he flew into the future—2015! And like all evolved trends in the future, typography in web design has changed over the years. Font families have become more affordable, easier to implement, and there are a multitude of options for people working with smaller budgets. This means designers have more typographic flexibility and can create clean, cohesive, and individualized websites.

The first few days at a new job are always a whirlwind of new people, new routines, and new computer software. When I started at bits, that meant learning a lot, and I do mean A LOT, of new computer software.

I am not a traditionalist by nature. In fact, I have always pushed and sometimes rejected the boundaries and theories of traditional brand thinking. I don’t like to focus on turning a brand into what I think it should be. I’m a realist, and I like to follow a more organic process, contemplating where a brand will live in the outside world. Perhaps this is why I was so uncomfortable with the great disconnect I used to see between the traditional and digital space.

Spring is finally here and we’re so excited to announce that our 2015 Brand Spring Clean Winner is Phoenix Youth Programs! We received some absolutely incredible submissions and, like kids in a pet store, we wanted to bring all of them home! Our decision wasn’t an easy one and we want to thank all of the great organizations who submitted an application.
