A few months ago I was faced with a tough decision. The decision to pack up my life in St. John’s, Newfoundland and move to Halifax.
Moving was something that had been in the back of my mind for a few months at that point. It’s not that I was unhappy; I just needed a change. I was feeling “stuck” in my job, and perhaps even a little lost with my personal life. So when I saw the opportunity for the position here at bits.co, I jumped on it.
The change wasn’t a decision I took lightly. It meant leaving my job where I had spent three years working my way up, leaving behind the best friendships I could have ever asked for, and of course leaving a city and a province that I had the pleasure of calling home. In a time where I needed a change more than ever in my life, it was the perfect opportunity.
After a week of talking with the bits team, I knew it was what I wanted. I quit my job, hired movers, packed my entire house into 24 boxes, said several tearful goodbyes, and booked a one-way plane ticket to Halifax. It was a whirlwind.
I was extremely nervous about my move to Halifax and my switch to the agency world. I knew it would be a huge change coming from a financial institution with over 150 employees to a small agency of six, but change is always something I’ve tried not to shy away from.
It was, and still is, a big change for me - though the adjustment period was a lot easier than I had anticipated. Coming into a small agency where the team is already so tightknit was intimidating, but from the second I walked in the door I felt welcomed. Now, it’s like having a second family.
The biggest change for me was working for clients as I was used to being the client. I was used to managing only my company’s social media accounts, and was in a spot where I had the freedom to go out on my own with it. Now I have clients to think about and have to develop a relationship to establish trust. When I take on a client for social media management, I am acting as their brand, as their public voice, so establishing trust is my number one goal.
It was also a huge change getting used to the office culture here. Having never worked in an agency before, I was unsure exactly what to expect. I think a lot of people have this expectation that the “agency life” means taking off for happy hour every day at 4:00, having a full stocked beer fridge, and always attending fancy networking events with fancy wine and smelly cheese.
Well let me tell you this isn’t entirely true. While we may always have a fully stocked beer fridge, the people here work harder than anywhere else I have ever worked. Having clients that you are responsible for and always trying to keep ahead while keeping them happy and meeting deadlines, is a lot of work; day and night, day in and day out.
Removing myself from my element (in every single way) has been a great personal and professional change. It has been one of the best decisions I have ever made. I embraced the change and I’m happier than ever!
